Rated X

Rated X is a fantasy piece written for Bert and Nancy Turetzky who premiered it in Mexico City. Structurally, the work is based on a motive played by the flute at the opening. This motive is presented in a variety of episodes which increase in intensity and motion eventually reaching high point, first in the double bass and then in the flute, about four-fifths of the way through the work. The intensity rapidly subsides and the piece ends quietly.

Although my original intention was that the flutist be female and the double bassist be male, other combinations are, of course, possible.

In form Rated X is a miniature tone poem. It is a sectional work with free, fantasia sections alternating with strictly metrical episodes. The little motive heard in the flute at the very beginning is an "idee fixe" and can be heard, varied, throughout the work, giving unity to the whole.

Rated X has been recorded by Bertram and Nancy Turetzky.
