The sunny, cheerful aspect of my fifth wind quintet suggested to me the title Summer Suite. The work was commissioned by the Virginia Music Teacher's Association and the Albemarle Ensemble performed the premier of the work at their annual meeting at JMU. Each movement has a descriptive title. The quintet begins with an Aubade, morning music, the complement to a nocturne. The second movement is an Arabesque which is followed by a Capriccio. Next is a Cavatina, a lyrical song. The last movement is a Tarantella, a lively dance.
