Dances for Small Spaces was written especially for the modern dancer Dena Madole. Her request was for a piece which would express in music five different dance patterns which could be executed on a small stage. The five movements of the work are Running, Circles, Falling, Movement and Suspension, and Running--Breathless.
The coordination of the piano with the tape sounds was accomplished by drawing a representation of the electronic sounds and placing the piano music underneath this drawing. Thus, the pianist is able to "see" what is happening on the tape and can coordinate the piano sounds with those on the tape.
