Overture to an American Comedy was commissioned by the University of Virginia Wind Ensemble who performed the work in celebration of their 50th anniversary.
The work opens with a curtain-raising fanfare and moves to a brisk allegro. The middle section is a "romantic episode". The fanfare returns to open the "second act". The first allegro returns in a varied form and is followed by a "chase scene" coda, the typical ending of many American film comedies.
Standard symphonic band with slip whistle and police whistle.
